About Tidal Drift

Tidal Drift is a premium construction company delivering bespoke builds, architecturally considered outdoor spaces, and technically complex projects with precision, creativity, and craftsmanship. Founded by Julian Orsborn-Smith, the family-run company was built on a clear principle: exceptional construction should combine technical carpentry expertise with creative technical passion.

Julian Orsborn-Smith brings an unusual background to construction: formative years in the film and illustration industries, where creativity, detail, and problem-solving are everyday currency.

That experience now shapes Tidal Drift's approach: blending core carpentry strength with the creative engineering needed to solve challenges other contractors avoid.

From complex extensions and bespoke garden rooms to modular and self-build homes and full new builds, Tidal Drift turns ambitious ideas into practical, lasting outcomes.

We work from a workshop in East Sussex on high-specification residential projects across the wider region. We support homeowners, architects, self-builders, and developers across Sussex and Surrey with extensions, garden rooms, modular and self-build, and new builds.

Working closely with architects, designers, and design-led homeowners, Tidal Drift values clear communication, ethical transparency, and collaborative delivery from concept through completion.

Every project is approached with care, technical rigour, and a commitment to lasting quality.

Tidal Drift is a member of the Federation of Master Builders. Before founding Tidal Drift, Julian won a Sussex Heritage Trust Award in 2024, which recognised the craftsmanship, professionalism and inventiveness he brought to a complex one-off build.

The aspect of Julian's work which truly sets him apart is his creativity and lateral thinking; qualities that are unusual among contractors and have proven to be a genuine advantage in project delivery.

What we value

Our work is informed by four principles. They're how we explain ourselves to clients, how we evaluate our own output, and how we choose the projects we take on.

Craftsmanship

Pride in delivering high-spec work with precision and attention to detail. Every build reflects a high standard of finish and long-term durability.

Precision

An engineering-led approach to design and execution. Accuracy in both, every time.

Collaboration

Working closely with clients, architects, and project partners to keep ideas aligned and delivery effective.

Integrity

Honesty and accountability. Transparent advice, realistic timelines, and clear communication at every stage of a project.

Our vision for Sussex

Beyond building, we want to put something back into the place we work. Our long-term ambition is to establish a community hub in Sussex: a space for local makers, trades, and residents to collaborate on shared projects, workshops, and bespoke builds. It's how we plan to use our expertise to support creativity and craft in the area where we work and live.

How we work

Precision construction meets creative vision. Our approach is built on technical excellence and ethical transparency. We don't just build. We collaborate with architects, engineers, and homeowners to solve the complex challenges of ambitious projects.

Intelligent collaboration

We work as a creative construction partner, drawing on Julian's film and illustration background to provide engineering and detailing solutions for technically demanding builds.

Advanced site intelligence

We use professional drone surveys for site analysis, project tracking, pre-construction planning, and roof inspections. High-resolution aerial data gives us a clear picture of brief, constraints, and architectural intent from day one. It's particularly useful where access is difficult or existing-condition surveys need to be precise.

Structured project management

We focus on longer, structured projects (typically six months and up), where clear communication, ethical practice, and cost transparency are the standard.

The workshop hub

Our workshop in East Sussex is where bespoke elements take shape: joinery, timber framing, and the detail work that distinguishes a high-value build from a competent one.

Technology

We use digital tools through the whole job, surveying a site accurately, working details out before they reach site, and keeping a clear record as the build goes up.
